Whilst that may sound like a very selfish headline, or a tacky sales pitch, it’s not. Well, it is a little bit – but let me explain!
First impressions can make or break you.
When someone approaches you and your business, they’re looking for someone that will help them solve a problem that they have. They’re looking out for number one (themselves), and they need to know that you are too.
How you respond to their first contact, how you act, how enthusiastic you are about their project – how enthusiastic you are about them.
It’s all about you.
You can have the most amazing, affordable products and services in the world, but if that customer doesn’t like you, there’s a good chance you won’t get the job.
It is harsh, but it’s true – it’s all about you.
If your products and services suit your customer’s needs to a tee, but they don’t feel that they have a connection with you – there’s a likelihood that you won’t get the job. Customers may not always know it, but they are shopping for a whole experience – the overall package.
Time for a confession.
I used to censor myself, and try and make people like me. This was true in my personal life as well as my business life, and it was really important to me that everyone liked me!
Then I realised that that wasn’t making me happy.
I realised that by constantly aiming to please and trying to make people like me, I was attracting the wrong sort of people and projects – they didn’t fit with my true values and my true self. I was taking on projects I wasn’t enjoying, I was spending time with people that fit with the censored version of myself, but not who I really was. It was exhausting.
In business, you get all sorts of advice to ‘make you successful’. But it all starts with your mindset. If you are confident in yourself and your abilities, you don’t need to fit the mold – you just need to be yourself. The more confident you are at being yourself, the more the right kind of people will be drawn to you! It’s a win win situation!
Since I’ve realised that not everyone will like me, or my business, I have been so much happier! I am finding that my ideal clients are being drawn to me, I love my job and the people I get to work with and I feel that I am doing exactly what I should be doing. I no longer mind if I don’t get a particular job, as I believe that everything happens for a reason and they obviously weren’t a good fit.
So, I hope that this article has resonated with you, that you are able to learn to value your true self and stop censoring. It really will make the world of difference, I promise!
